Opening night for Carnaval 2009 in Brazil. Tonight and tomorrow night, the city of São Paulo will showcase the carnival 2009 parades.

Sunday and Monday nights will be Rio de Janeiro’s turn to do the same. Rosas de Ouro samba school is the second school to parade in this first night’s line up.

Brazilian Carnaval has origins in the old Portuguese pre-lent celebration know as the entrudo. People celebrated by throwing little balls of wax filled with perfumed water at each other. The first procession with adorned floats was in 1850, and in 1856 costumed revelers took to the streets. Until 1899, no songs were written expressly for Carnaval, and people danced to music of European inspiration.

In 1917, the Samba appeared officially. Automobile parades were held in downtown Rio de Janeiro with tons of paper confetti and streamers, and people went to the beach in elaborate paper costumes. In the last few decades, the parade has become the greatest attraction of Carnaval in Brazil and is decidedly luxurious and gigantic.

Carnival is the most famous holiday in Brazil.
It lasts four days and four nights.
It starts on Saturday and finishes on a Thursday.
People put on their costumes and go out into the streets or to clubs.

There are also the Samba schools
which make a parade showing their fantasies, music, and allegorical cars.

Every year each samba school displays a different theme which they have studied, incorporated the song that they have written, costumes and dances that all reflect their theme.

There are 14 Samba Schools in Sao Paulo parade and 12 in Rio de Janeiro.

São Paulo, Brazil: The Champions’ Parade – “Unidos de VIla Maria,” the third place “Escola de Samba” (Trans. “Samba school”) from São Paulo parades in the early hours of the Morning on Feb 9, 2008 at 3:00 AM, for the final farewell to the publc as tradition calls it on this Saturday. Over 3,000 dancers tell their show titled: “100 Years of the Japanese Immigration.”
The city of São Paulo–one of the largest cities in the world– watches this morning their Samba school bid farewell for the very last time until they meet again, next Year, 2009.

The Brazilians call this show “The Top-6 Champion Samba Schools since last-weekend annual “Carnaval” parade show (Feb 1-6). At 3:00 AM, Unidos da Vila Maria displays the Japanese influence in the city of São Paulo.

The city has today the largest population of Japanese in he world, second only to Japan itself. Here, Unidos de Vila Maria pays tribute to the Japanese population of São Paulo, which has brought much technology and culture to Brazil. And for what it looks like, Japanese can do the Samba too!
